Meditation Practice & Teaching
50 Hours
with Libby Cox & Ana Pilar Cruz

Location & Schedule
Two Birds Yoga Training
at Balanced Hot Yoga Eugene

Thursdays in February & March 2019, 5-9pm
One intensive weekend: March 2 & 3, 11am-4pm

Yoga posture practice, according to Patanjali's Yoga Sutra, prepares the practitioner for breathing and meditation. The breath is hard-wired to the brain. Change the breath, change the brain.
This course will explore myriad ways of breathing and meditating, helping you as a student of yoga to find the methods that resonate with you.
In addition, if you're a yoga teacher and you so desire, you will learn to teach pranayama and meditation, incorporating appropriate styles into public classes.

You can approach this course in one of two ways: attend as a practitioner of meditation and learn to deepen your practice. Come from 5-7pm each Thursday ($190 total cost), or come for the certificate with Two Birds Yoga Training and learn to teach pranayama and meditation as well, incorporating appropriate styles into public classes. ($895).

Details of Training

Thursdays
5-7pm

Each Thursday from 5:00-7:00pm, you will learn different meditation techniques from two main philosophies:
yoga darsana: traditional yoga based on traditional texts such as the Hatha Yoga Pradipika and the Yoga Sutra of Patanjali;
and Tantra, based on the teachings of a South Indian Srividya tradition. Yoga Darsana offers meditations following pranayama, or different breathing techniques, and with focus on external objects such as a candle flame, or a mental image like the moon. Tantric meditation offers different tools for focusing the mind and the body's senses, including but not limited to Mantra (chanting), Yantra (holding the eyes on sacred geometry), Mudra (specific hand positions designed to focus attention), and Devata (focus on imagery related to diving energy in Hindu mythology.)

7-9pm
For yoga teachers interested in incorporating meditation into your public classes, these two hours each week will include discussion on effective ways to introduce the meditative aspect of yoga to the general public, tools for teaching, and practice teaching.

Libby will lead 3 of 4 Thursday evening discussions, and Ana one Thursday discussion each month.

Mythology of Ganesha, Shiva & Parvati : A "family portrait"

Who are we but the stories we tell about ourselves? This intimate study will deepen your understanding of the bountiful and diverse Yogic vision of the universe; from gods and goddesses to heroes and heroines, parables, trials and tribulations of Indian Mythology.

This round, we will focus on Ganesha, one of the most pervasive images from the Hindu pantheon & guardian of thresholds.
By cultivating an understanding of some of the history of yoga philosophy and of Goddess-based Tantra Yoga, you will develop a personalized practice and learn to relate these descriptions to your own life’s story. This will allow you, in turn, to help your students live into their own stories.

You might find in your teaching that the postures and practice flow easily from
you, but converting a body of movement into words can be daunting! Together we
will work on verbal cue refinement by studying elements of theater to understand
the performative aspect of teaching. We will also explore the language of the body,
of non-violent communication, and the Gardener model of multiple intelligences, all
as means to improve the fluency of verbal instruction.  In addition, this course will
offer a no-holds-barred conversation on the issues that come with power and
responsibility around stepping into the seat of the yoga teacher.
